Jargon Buster
At Ninetyone Degrees we like to keep things simple. If we use any technical terms we will try and explain them fully to help both our clients and our staff to understand each other.
Let's start with some web jargon:
- Domain - or domain name, is the name of your website. It is what people type into the address bar of their browser to find your site. It is often preceeded by a 'www' but this is not necessary.
- TLD - Top Level Domain. This is the bit of your domain after the dot, most common TLDs are '.com' or '.co.uk'
- Server - A server is a computer. The files, documents and images that make up your site need to be stored somewhere so that they can be accessed by users on the internet. The server is constantly running, supplying documents and files when needed.
- Hosting - This is the process of storing the files for your website on the server.
- POP - Stands for Post Office Protocol and allows mail to be delivered to your address. Think of it as your postman.
- SMTP - Simple MailTransfer Protocol allows emails to be sent out from an account on your domain name.
